Associations and Organizations for Sustainable and Organic Farming
I titled this page sustainable and organic crops, but many of the organizations that are on this
page go far beyond just crops. The information they provide covers all aspects of farming, crops, livestock, rural
life and living.
American Farmland Trust: The mission of American
Farmland Trust is to help farmers and ranchers protect their land, produce a healthier environment and build
successful communities. American Farmland Trust is recognized as the nation's leader for saving America’s farm
and ranch land, promoting healthy farming practices and supporting farms and farmers.
American Society of Agronomy: (ASA) is a prominent
international scientific society headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. Society members are dedicated to the
conservation and wise use of natural resources to produce food, feed, and fiber crops while maintaining and
improving the environment. Today, ASA is seen as a progressive scientific society meeting the needs of its
members through publications, recognition and awards, placement service, certification programs, meetings, and
student activities.

Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association: A
worldwide movement, biodynamic agriculture is the oldest, non-chemical agricultural movement and pre-dates
organic agriculture by some twenty years. Biodynamic farming and gardening does more than avoid chemicals; it
seeks to work actively with the health-giving forces of nature. Farms and wineries, among others, may be
certified Biodynamic by the Demeter USA Association.
Conservation Technology Information Center: CTIC is recognized
in the U.S. as a trusted source for information about current and emerging issues in conservation and
sustainable agriculture and plans to extend this recognition internationally. CTIC benefits from and serves a
strong network comprised of leaders in agriculture and conservation. Through this network, CTIC promotes and
disseminates comprehensive data, research and materials related to conservation and sustainable agriculture that
achieves better soil, cleaner water, greater profits and a brighter future.
Ecological Farming Association: The Ecological
Farming Association nurtures healthy and just farms, food systems, communities and environment by bringing
people together for education, alliance building and advocacy. Through educational conferences, training
programs, on-farm events and communications initiatives, we pursue a safe and healthful food system that
strengthens soils, protects air and water, encourages diverse ecosystems and economies, and honors rural
life.
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition: (NSAC)
Supporting economic and environmental sustainability of agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.
NSAC’s vision of agriculture is one where a safe, nutritious, ample, and affordable food supply is produced by a
legion of family farmers who make a decent living pursuing their trade, while protecting and improving the
environment and contributing to the strength and stability of their communities.
Organic Trade Association: (OTA) is a
membership-based business association that focuses on the organic business community in North America.
OTA's mission is to promote and protect the growth of organic trade to benefit the environment, farmers, the
public and the economy.
Rodale Institute: Rodale Institute is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit that creates global solutions from the ground up. Our soil scientists and a cooperating network of
researchers have documented that organic farming techniques offer the best solution to global warming and
famine. We improve the health and well-being of people and the planet.
Sustainable Agriculture Education: SAGE develops
projects for public agencies, developers, planners and community groups, and helps inspire informed action
through entrepreneurial, collaborative approaches. Our mission is to develop urban edge agriculture, and engage
diverse regional populations with the sustainable agriculture movement.
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education:
Since 1988, (SARE) program has helped advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound and
good for communities through a nationwide research and education grants program.
The Land Institute: Our purpose is to develop an
agricultural system with the ecological stability of the prairie and a grain yield comparable to that from
annual crops. We are now assembling a team of advisors which includes members of the National Academy of
Sciences. These scientists understand our work and stand ready to endorse the feasibility of what we have come
to call Natural Systems Agriculture.
